This year we have entered the following four open heifer calves into two different auctions that both take place during the 2019 Iowa Beef Expo in Des Moines, IA. The first heifer is consigned to the Red Angus Classic Sale on February 12, 2019. The other three black heifers are consigned to a new sale called the Ladies Night Pen of 3 Sale on February 14, 2019. Lena F27 is a real broody, wide-based, heavy muscled heifer. She was one of our favorite heifer calves all summer. She posted an impressive 111 weaning weight ratio while starting out below average at birth weight. Her EPDs put her at the top of the breed for growth, marbling, and ME. Her sire, Bieber In the Black D315 is a black, red carrier who was the second high seller in Bieber’s 2017 sale. He is a real outlier for marbling, scanning an awesome 9.04% IMF with a ratio of 240 in a contemporary group of 92 head. We really like how this first set of his calves are looking. The Lena cow family has become one of the very best in our herd, and we have already flushed 3 cows from this family. F27’s dam is no exception, posting an average birth ratio of 98 and weaning ratio of 106 on her first 3 calves, while proving to be an easy keeper and have an excellent disposition. F27 should make an excellent cow that produces lots of pounds in a moderate framed package with excellent carcass quality.

These three heifers are all registered Red Angus, despite the fact that they are black. They all carry the red gene, and would have a red calf half the time when bred to a red bull. This heifer has a really good set of EPDs that put her in the top 10 % of the Red Angus breed for both the HerdBuilder (maternal) index and the GridMaster (terminal) index. The Lena cow family is one of the best in our herd, and we are currently flushing her grand-dam, A02.

The sire of these three heifers is a black, red carrier bull who was the second high seller at Bieber Red Angus' 2017 sale. He is a breed leader for marbling, as he scanned an incredible 9.04% IMF with a 240 ratio in a group of 92 head. We have selected for marbling in our cowherd for years, and as a result, all three of these heifers are in the top 1% of the Red Angus breed for marbling EPD. This heifer had a very light birth weight, but still grew very well. She is a very pretty, feminine heifer who should make a fantastic cow.

We have been very happy with our In The Black calves, and we have kept almost all our red daughters back as replacements, but don't want to get too many black cows in our red herd. All three of these heifers would have made our keeper pen if they had turned out red as well. This heifer had one of our heaviest weaning weights, posting a 112 weaning ratio. Her dam has done a great job of raising low birth weight and high weaning weight calves, with her 6 calves averaging a 92 birth ratio and 110 weaning ratio.
